How to Prepare for the First Violin Lesson

You’ve decided to enroll your child into violin lessons- how exciting is that?! But, how do you prepare your child for their first lesson?

Many parents ask this question to themselves, but never tend to reach out to get advice. A huge part of the initial training is LISTENING! Prepare your child and set them up for success by giving them plenty of opportunities to hear what the violin sounds like and also what playing *in tune* sounds like. Putting this in action could look like listening to Suzuki Violin Book 1 in the car everyday while driving to school!

Next, schedule out when your practice time will be everyday. Children thrive on schedules, so incorporating this from the start will make it easier on everyone.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard students say they forgot to practice- this is because it isn’t scheduled or it isn’t a priority. Remember that practice makes progress and if practice doesn’t happen then progress *might* still happen but it will be slow.

Have conversations with your child about respect and what it means to respect their violin. Remind them that the violin isn’t a toy and they have to hold it correctly so it doesn’t get hurt. DO NOT let your child try to play the violin before their first lesson. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the excitement and anticipation, but this will only create bad habits physically. Your teacher will show you how to hold the violin and bow safely in your first lesson! Yay!!

Tip: have your child name their violin before their first lesson!

Here are those preparations one more time:

• Start listening to Suzuki Violin Book 1

•Think about your practice schedule

•Remind your child that the violin is NOT a toy

Lastly, remember that learning an instrument is meant to be fun and exciting! Whether it’s a hobby or a career down the road, you are taking steps to help your child grow. Always be positive and encouraging!
